Twitter needs no introduction. The wildly popular social media platform has been around since 2006 and its popularity hasn’t slowed down. In fact, it’s only getting more popular thanks to its regular use by top celebrities and politicians. Since its inception, the public messaging service has allowed users to compose their thoughts using only 140 characters. In many cases, this was limiting, however, many found ways around it.
As of yesterday, Twitter users need to find ways around it no more. Those messages, which we all know as “tweets”, have been expanded to include 280 characters! That literally provides all Twitter users with the ability to say twice as much! Is this a good thing? Is it a bad thing? As you may have guessed, tons of Twitter users took to the social media platform yesterday to express their views.
According to Sarah Perez on TechCrunch.com, not everyone is a fan. “The decision was met with a fair amount of controversy, given that one of Twitter’s defining characteristics is the brevity of users’ posts,” she informs.
“Many argued that the increase to 280 characters would make Twitter less readable, as longer tweets filled their timelines. Others suggested that Twitter’s focus on a feature no one really asked for was diverting its attention from more critical problems – like the rampant abuse, harassment and bullying it’s become known for unfortunately.”
Why did Twitter expand its tweets to 280 characters to begin with?
Perez reveals that the expansion was inspired by the idea that it allows people to express their thoughts better. Going forward, people will be less likely to run out of room when composing their tweets. She also notes that Twitter found that 140 characters were constricting certain languages. Those who tweet in languages such as English, Spanish, Portuguese and French often require twice as many characters as those who tweet in Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
