How To Keep Your Workaholic Self Happy During The Holidays

Christmas is only five days away! So, without further ado, the entire MeloTel team would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas! We would also like to send out a very Happy Hanukkah and Happy Kwanzaa to everyone who celebrates those great holidays. All three celebrations are occurring during the same week this year!

As a reminder, today, the MeloTel office will be closing early – 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, to be exact. It’s a very exciting day for us. We’ll be holding our annual Christmas party at our all-time favourite restaurant, David Duncan House. Last year, the amazing eatery hosted our 10th anniversary celebration. And while the number 11 may not be seen as a special one, we’re elated to also be celebrating our 11th year in business tonight.

In our last blog, we began to offer a few tips for busy entrepreneurs who would like to actually enjoy the holidays instead of worrying about work the entire time. However, if you’re a workaholic, you may want to consider a few tips that will help you to stay happy during your break.

Give all business partners a heads up.

Many business owners worry about the business relationships they have during the holidays. While it’s sensible to assume that most people will be taking some kind of break (restaurant owners, for example, don’t usually have this luxury), it’s wise to get in touch with suppliers, partners and other colleagues to inform them about the dates and times you’ll be out of the office.

“The key is to give clients, vendors and any other business contacts a sufficient heads up that you’ll be gone,” says Nellie Akalp on Mashable.com, “Nothing is more frustrating (and unprofessional) as talking to someone one day, then emailing them a few days later only to get an auto out-of-the-office response that he or she will be out for a week.”

Do some email inbox cleaning.

We recognize that even the most overworked of business owners can’t spend an entire day relaxing. So, if necessary, take some holiday time to do some light work. We suggest cleaning out your email inbox. Unquestionably, it can get inundated with messages you’ve likely read and replied to, but haven’t deleted. Why not start 2020 fresh by having an inbox that is light on the no-longer-needed messages?

“Spend time deleting unnecessary emails and to-dos,” advises Erica Duran on Under30CEO.com, “This will allow you to be focused and uncluttered when you return from a few days off during the holidays.”

Prioritize your must-do tasks.

Not everything that hasn’t been done by the time the holidays roll around must be done before the holidays are over. Relax – take a moment to prioritize your most important tasks, and handle them one by one.

As Akalp advises, “for your business activities, focus only on the most important items that need to be accomplished; one trick is to make a list of what needs to be done, and ask yourself which one would make the biggest difference to your business (hint: it’s not always responding to whoever is complaining the loudest).”
