Finding The Perfect Domain Name For Your New Company Website

Coming up with a domain name for your new company website sounds like a piece of cake, doesn’t it? But, when you really think about it, it’s an incredibly important decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Consider the fact that, for all intents and purposes, your website address is going to stick with your business for as long as it exists. Therefore, it should be something that accurately represents your brand.

Admittedly, the choice can often be a no brainer. The name of your business usually makes for the best domain name. Of course, that’s the case for MeloTel. Landing on made perfect sense for us. However, what if your company name is a lot longer than seven letters? What if your company name’s “no brainer” domain name has already been taken? What then? How do you find the web address that’s perfect for your business?

First things first, be sure to find out if your domain name choice has been taken. To be on the safe side, it’s best to have a list of options. And that includes having various domain name extensions. At MeloTel, we highly recommend going with either a .com or a .ca. If you own a business that has clients from different parts of the world, a .com web address is the way to go.

If you are a Canadian business with a specifically Canadian customer base, a .ca web address works best. It signifies that you are both proudly and uniquely Canadian. And, if you wish to grow your customer base within Canada, letting consumers know that you are, quite clearly, a Canadian brand is a wise choice. A domain name ending with .ca will do that for you.

Keep it short and sweet.

This is incredibly important for businesses that have long names. John’s Antiques & Rare Collectibles Emporium, for example, would definitely require a web address that is far shorter than the entire business name. Some people recommend shortening such long business names to their initials. In this case, would be a suggestion. However, it’s highly recommended that a web address be easy to say.

That way, when it is communicated verbally, people will be able to easily remember how to locate it online. Unless the made up word “jarce” is part of the branding of this fictional company, it may not necessarily be the best choice for the company website’s domain name. The abbreviated may be a better bet. It’s easy to say, easy to remember and remains in keeping with the brand’s official title.
