Not every customer that calls you during the holiday season should be required to leave a voicemail in order to hear back from you. Are there other ways you can be reached? At MeloTel, we offer email options and our website’s Live Chat feature as alternative communication methods.

At the end of the day, no one wants to sit on the phone for several minutes if they’re not going to get a live person to speak to. Stick to the details about your availability and kindly request your callers to leave their names and numbers so that you can connect with them as promptly as you can.
As Grech writes, “callers won’t need your life story, and won’t want to wait around for a 2-minute greeting to end just so they can leave a message. Don’t hide the details, tell them where you will be, when you will be there, or when you won’t be there, and how to get in touch.”
Remember that the holiday season isn’t just about Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. It’s also about welcoming in a new year. And this year is special because we’ll be welcoming in a new decade! Be sure to let all of your callers know how much you appreciate their business. Note that they’ve been a big part of your company’s success over the past decade (or however long it’s been operational).
“This season presents a great opportunity to tell callers how much you appreciate them and thank them for their loyalty,” writes Sioban Schmeding on Holdcom.com, “Don’t miss the opportunity to share your sentiments and season greetings with all your callers. Everyone wants to know they are appreciated, especially around this time of year.”
If you can’t be reached during the holidays, when can you be reached? Answering this question will help your callers to go from riled up to relaxed. Your holiday voicemail greeting should make clear when you’ll be able to get back to your customers who leave messages. As Grech notes, the only reason your phone rang is because someone wanted to get in touch. Letting them know when you’ll be in touch is a great customer service move.
“They got your voicemail because you were busy or just not there,” says Grech, “If you section off a block of your day to check voicemails, let the caller know so they can expect a time for you to return their call. People will leave more details if they know someone will check it later.”
